Slime Mold - Reticularia lycoperdon I found several of these round masses on a snag that had been chewed by a beaver a couple years ago.     You found yourself a slime :) (I love slime molds). It's Lycogala sp. - probably Lycogala epidendrum. It goes through different color forms, starting out pink-orange and ending brown/gray It's the perfect Halloween slime around here... it appears in orange/brown colonies right around October on old logs.       Ah ha! Thanks so much! Lycogala didn't occur to me for some reason, but the appearance and spores definitely would match! I love slimes too. When my kids were a bit younger, they loved poking Lycogala epidendrum. Posted 3 years ago

The False Puffball

The False Puffball, "Reticularia lycoperdon", is one of the more obvious species of slime mould or Myxogastria, typically seen in its reproductive phase as a white 'swelling' on standing dead trees in the spring, or on large pieces of fallen wood. Alder is a common host.
