Wild Turkey (Male/Tom) - Meleagris gallopavo You can tell that this is a male because of the long snood dangling over his beak. Also, he has a beard (long hairs), and a big wattle (red, dangling thing on the neck)

Habitat: There was a rafter of turkeys hanging out in a grassy spot that was situated between a forest and the coastline.

Fun fact: When excited, their head, wattle, and snood can turn several different colors based on their mood.
1. What an impressive scene! How close were you? Posted 3 years ago
1. Maybe 20-30 meters. They let me get pretty close, but were cautious. I probably could have gotten closer, but didn't want to stress them out. They were the most chill turkeys I've ever seen. Most run away before I can get a decent shot. I found some scratchings and dust bowls from them too...will post photos of those at some point. Posted 3 years ago

3. That's an amazing photo! The turkeys I usually see are yellow and have butterball written on them lol Posted 3 years ago
1. Thanks, lol! It reminds me of a few years ago when someone asked my son where turkeys live, and he said, "the grocery store". Posted 3 years ago
4. Excellent, love the confident pose. Posted 3 years ago
1. Thanks...It's amazing he was so calm because they were getting swarmed by mosquitoes. I wonder if the mosquitoes can't penetrate the thick skin on the turkeys' heads? Hmm... Posted 3 years ago
1. That's a good question, I honestly have no idea. I do know that many mammals have simply given up on chasing away flies and mosquitos. Posted 3 years ago
1. True...I think that is probably the case here. In this photo, there is a mosquito on top of the female's head. She seems unconcerned.

1. They should evolve towards a Zebra pattern. Pest insects get confused by that pattern. Posted 3 years ago
1. Haha! Perfect. Maybe I will try that too.

It looks like some turkeys have already evolved this, though:

1. The zebra turkeys, I have no photos of you as a Zebra, so guess you know what to do. Posted 3 years ago
