Lesser Corpse Flies - Family Sphaeroceridae There were hundreds of these flies at my light on this night. Unfortunately, I doubt I can get them identified to species. They didn't stay still and I didn't get any good, diagnostic shots that I know of.
These flies are associated with rotting corpses, feces, and rotting plants. They are important in decomposer communities such as compost and manure...I live across from a farm, so I assume that's where they came from.
1. Glad you posted this, I sometimes get them too, but didn't know what they were. Probably from my neighbor, he has a large garden with a compost area. Posted 4 years ago
    1. Oh, neat! If they come to my light again, I'll capture one and take some pictures under the scope. Posted 4 years ago
