  2. How hard can it be? Very hard. I did see some 5 trillion photos of a woolly bear in my efforts. Posted 4 years ago
    1. I'm starting to think it may be a very unusual variation of the yellow bear (Virginian tiger moth - Spilosoma virginica) Posted 4 years ago
      1. I think you're correct with assuming Acronicta sp., especially A. perdita...

        Acronicta perdita:

        Acronicta oblinita:

        1. It seems like perdita is the most likely. A. oblinta is only found on the coastal areas in western WA and I was over on the east side of the mountains, so that one was crossed off the list early.

I've been consulting with some folks over at BugGuide. They have a small collection of photos that are an exact match that they've been presuming to be perdita - but it's not confirmed. The photos are from Northern and Southern California and Oregon. The other species that does occur both in here in WA and in California is - strigulata, neither of us has been able to find any photos at all of what the larval stage looks like...

          1. Sounds like you're making good progress. I looked up A. strigulata too, but didn't find any images. I even looked in a couple books. I wish there was a western version of the Caterpillars of Eastern North America by David Wagner. Posted 4 years ago
