I find that especially in many of these bland looking genera there a lot of presumed species, but little attention paid to them...... You'll find the most common one listed but there's probably dozens of other species that might only be found in someone's thesis paper, an 1800's monograph or as a dried specimen in some museum's herbarium. If they aren't tasty or poisonous or charismatic enough no one will have bothered to do any genetic studies to truly determine how many different ones there really are or even publish any in-depth descriptions....
The mushrooms sites that I consult usually have one or two of the most widely encountered species shown, then if I consult the database that I have that has around 4,200 PNW mushroom species listed, I'll see that there are quite a few more. It makes it really hard when you find something that you think kind of looks like it might be a certain species, but there's something niggling that just doesn't look right.
