
Wolf spider hunting on water - closeup, Heeswijk-Dinther, Netherlands
I saw a tiny spider rapidly crossing a pond, clearly on the hunt. It's a wolf spider, one of multiple species known to hunt directly on the water surface, where they target small arthropods such as springtails. They have a line of sight of about 10cm in every direction.
This one is probably in the Pardosa genus, which has many species that can typically not be identified from just a photo. Species in this genus have a raised squarish block head where eyes are strategically placed so that no matter how you look at it, two eyes will always look at you.
