  1. You're finding some really beautiful diptera! Posted 4 years ago
    1. I agree! These are fantastic! Posted 4 years ago
    2. The new lens helps a lot. I hardly even tried for these guys with my old one, as by the time I got close enough they were scared away and I'm much more successful at getting good focus more often too. They are proving difficult to pin down to the species level though... Posted 4 years ago, modified 4 years ago
      1. Because of the larger focal length?

        I recently discovered this site:
        https://www.diptera-in-beeld.nl/

It's in dutch and old-school but sometimes it helps me get a starting point. In this case it's probably of little use.

        1. Indeed - partly because of the longer focal length. I don't have to be as close now and it's a 2x rather than .5x, so I'm able to be far 'closer' from further away.... auto focus helps a lot with active subjects too. Posted 4 years ago
          1. Wait.....a 2:1 lens with auto focus, and big distance from subject? What alien object is this? Posted 4 years ago
            1. lol.... I wouldn't say it's a huge working distance... I get can good framing at about 8-12 inches now, but at the same magnification my old one was about 3... much easier to 'sneak up' to flies and other skittish bugs with that - and then if they tolerate that, I can move in. I usually end up with a bit of a sequence... the 'safe' photo, closer... closer.... closer... Posted 4 years ago, modified 4 years ago
              1. Ok, but which lens is 2:1 and has auto focus? I've never seen one. Posted 4 years ago
                1. my bad... it's 1:1... but you can put the 1.4x or 2x converter on it to get it there and it's still autofocus. I have the 1.4, that I use with my long lens, but I don't think I'll be super tempted to use it with this one (it's a Fuji 80mm macro). It slows the focus a bit and the depth would get to be so low.... it'd probably only be good for things that stay very still. Posted 4 years ago, modified 4 years ago
                  1. lol, 2:1 with auto focus would be my dream lens, although I must say for many insects 2:1 isn't really needed. Anyway, really enjoying how your new lens brings within reach new categories. Your flowers and fungi posts were already legendary. Posted 4 years ago
  2. Great find and amazing shot Mor Posted 4 years ago
