It provides a fairly safe habitat for nesting Glaucous-winged gulls, Black Oystercatchers, a pair of Pigeon Guillemots, at least one pair of White-crowned Sparrows and a haul out for Harbour seals and  both Stellar and California Sea Lions. Shore birds like killdeer, Black Turnstones and Surfbirds also frequent this little piece of rock. I am sure I have missed quite a few birds and haven&rsquo;t started on the flora, the intertidal or surrounding waters where among other things we also see Orcas, Humpbacks and White-sided dolphins. Centre Islet! This photo is a habitat photo. This piece of rock is once again alive with noise and a flutter of wings. It provides a fairly safe habitat for nesting Glaucous-winged gulls, Black Oystercatchers, a pair of Pigeon Guillemots, at least one pair of White-crowned Sparrows and a haul out for Harbour seals and  both Stellar and California Sea Lions. The glaucous-winged gull is a large, white-headed gull. The genus name is from Latin "Larus" which appears to have referred to a gull or other large seabird. The specific "glaucescens" is New Latin for "glaucous" from the Ancient Greek, "glaukos", denoting the grey color of its wings.
