Upside-down jellyfish - Cassiopea sp.

  1. Those green things are fish? That's quite mysterious. Posted 14 years ago
    1. Yeah, it appears as though a few are swimming free. It almost appears to be one of those co-habitative lifestyles, like the cleaning fish that live off of the bacteria on sharks and whales.
Only here, it looks like they're cleaning a jellyfish... I'm stumped!

      1. Sounds like a solid theory. It is quite often in coral reefs that species team up to benefit from each other. Posted 14 years ago
    2. This is an upside-down jellyfish - Cassiopea sp. The mesogloea, the jelly-like tissue, contains symbiotic zooxanthellae, single-celled protists, which are photosynthetic and give the jellyfish its variable color, often bluish-grey or bluish-green.
