  2. This one is yet another species - the Broad-bodied Chaser (Libellula depressa). As the name suggests, it has a broader, more flattened abdomen compared to the Orthetrum species and have a dark patch at the base on both fore and hind wings. Here's a top view

This chaser was sitting on the other side of a ditch (like they always do...) which was filled with 10cm high water. I had to stand in the water to be able to get close enough and take this photo (I had my sandals on which I was planning to clean anyway). <br />

    It's look-alike is the Scarce Chaser (Libellula fulva) which has dark patches at the base of the hind wings and smaller ones on the tip of the wings.

"Libellula depressa", the broad-bodied chaser or broad-bodied darter, is one of the most common dragonflies in Europe and central Asia. It is very distinctive with a very broad flattened abdomen, four wing patches and, in the male, the abdomen becomes pruinose blue.
