  3. Hi Niel, sorry this is certainly _not_ a Mesembrius
That genus is in the subfamily Eristalinae and should have the Eristaline dip in wing vein R4+5.
Also, your fly is much prettier than most Eristaline hoverflies. Look at those pretty tri-coloured patterns on the pronotum and abdomen!
You should probably look in the Syrphinae (Syrphini?) for this one, but I´m no good with Aussie hovers...
    Cheers, Arp
P.S. Maybe genus Citrogramma could come close, but that´s just a winging it ...
Images is this key look promising:

      1. Citrogramma should be okay, but the two Australian species (C. australe and C. notiale) seem to be pretty much indistinguishable, except by male genitalia and both occur in the same area. So, until JD supports genus level identification we cannot put a name to this I´m afraid.
Bit of a shame, as there seem to be _very_ few good images of life specimen around on the internet, so this here image is a very nice addition to documenting the Australian species of the genus (congrats on that!)
Only alternative would be to catch the next one and send it in to an expert.
