Milkweed Weevil Oviposition Pits - Rhyssomatus sp.?? I'm not sure what these are. When I took the photo, I assumed they were milkweed oviposition pits from a weevil. But, now I'm not sure. I wish I have pulled them up in case someone was underneath.
(Female weevils use their long snouts to chew holes in the stems of milkweed. then, they deposit their eggs into these holes. They chew several holes in a vertical line in the lower part of the milkweed stem, laying an egg in each. The sticky latex from the plant oozes from the wounds to create raised, conspicuous blobs.)
