  1. By the eye arrangement, this is a wolf spider, family Lycosidae. Posted 4 years ago

    2. Wondering if you can help...

The requested "Lycosa obscuroides" does not seem a name in actual use. Doesn't exist in eol.org, GBIF or iNaturalist. I wonder if Allocosa obscuroides is the same thing. So far haven't found evidence that they are synonyms.

      1. Allocosa obscuroides is recognised (Platnick), but I don't think one can ID this specimen from the small amount of detail shown in the image. For example, some genus Lycosa sp. look incredibly similar to genus Tasmanicosa sp. The Lycosidae of Australia are very difficult to identify without the aid of a microscope and extensive taxonomic details. Surface markings can be quite variable for a given species, from specimen to specimen, from male to female and from juvenile to adult.

Over the last decade or so a major revision of the Australian wolf spider fauna has been undertaken by Dr. Volker Framenau and colleagues, but is still not complete.

        1. Thanks so much for the excellent info! I've experienced similar challenges with European wolf spiders, so will leave this one at the genus level for now. Posted 4 years ago
