  1. Arp, can you explain the term Leatherjacket? What group does it refer to in simple terms? Posted 4 years ago
    1. A leatherjacket is the larva of a crane fly (much like the Dutch term "emelt"). Vernacular naming doesn't always strictly follow taxonomic insights. So a crane fly and its larva belong to something like the superfamily Tipuloidea, including the families Tipulidae, Limoniidae and others. I'm guessing this one is a Tipulidae, but I still need to dig up the keys for the larvae of these... Posted 4 years ago
