African Crested Porcupine Quill - Hystrix cristata This species of porcupine has really long quills that are up to ~35 cm (14 in) in length! The quill in this photo is a defensive quill. But, this species also has rattle quills on its tail. The rattle quills are wider than a defensive quill, and when these quills vibrate, they make a hiss-like rattling sound.<br />

  1. Both ends seem so sharp, how are they attached to the skin? Posted 4 years ago
    1. The end on the left isn't really sharp and is where it attaches to the porcupine. The defensive quills aren't attached too strongly to the porcupine. The tip on the right is sharp and slightly curved. Posted 4 years ago
