Fig Wasps Fig wasps wandering around after exiting an opened ripe fruit of the Weeping Fig (Ficus benjamina). Each of these are only around 2mm only. There could be 2 species here. Not all are pollinating wasps. There is a study showing that there could be as much as 16 wasp species associated with weeping figs. The black one could be Eupristina koningsbergeri (Agaonidae) which is a pollinator of this fig species. Geotagged,Malaysia,Summer Click/tap to enlarge

  1. Closer look on the black one:
Weeping Fig Wasp with ovipositor A tiny fig wasp, possibly a Eupristina koningsbergeri (Agaonidae) which is the sole beneficial pollinator species of the Weeping Fig (Ficus benjamina). This female is black-colored, only 2mm, and have a curved ovipositor while the wingless male is much smaller. There is a study showing that up to 16 fig wasp species are associated with Weeping Fig but not all of them are beneficial. Eupristina koningsbergeri,Geotagged,Malaysia,Summer

  2. The host fruit (Ficus benjamina):
Fruit Stages of Weeping Fig Unripe, almost ripe, and fully ripe. Weeping figs are called for their long drooping leaves that shows it looks sad. This is from a large fig tree standing out in an oil palm plantation, probably fully covered the original host tree. It was fruiting heavily and producing lots of fig wasps which attracts lots of swifts flying around. All fruit stages are observed. This plantation company has some good fig trees growing in their land and my organization has obtained permission to collect and grow these fig trees in our reforestation sites.
