Neotibicen winnemanna) on a dirt road at a dense mixed forest edge. It was not pleased when I shooed it away to get a better view of the cicada! I&#039;ve heard that this species has been known to catch/prey on hummingbirds!<br />

"Best known as the "Scissor(s) Grinder" but also referred to as the "Southern Scissor(s) Grinder, N. winnemanna is best known from areas east of the Appalachian Mountains including Atlantic states from PA south to FL(?). Populations of these cicadas seem to occupy the lower mountain elevations, Piedmont Plateau and upper/inner Atlantic Coastal Plain where they frequent deciduous & mixed deciduous-coniferous forests. Populations often approach the bays and estuaries, but are generally absent in maritime.. more
