JungleDragon celebrates 2,000 species! Dear community,

Yesterday we crossed the 2,000 species boundary! This is quite an accomplishment in many ways. First of all, it means that the species diversity is very high on JungleDragon, since we have less than 10,000 photos in total.

I'm also proud to report that about 75% of all photos on JungleDragon have their species identified. This very high number is the result of tireless community volunteers who take an interest in identifying species so that others can learn from them. We certainly are not the biggest in total images, but few sites are so disciplined and educational by linking specie information to photos and allowing a friendly way to walk the tree of life:
Thank you dear and local community of this little site, as a token of appreciation, please find above a sketch from the JungleDragon archives. 1. Also thanks to you Ferdy for developing, paying and maintaining this great site. And for motivating us by always taking the time to give positive comments on pictures where appropriate.
Keep up the good work! And I am looking forward to the redesigned site.

    1. I couldn't agree with you more, Joost.
I was just working on the ID and I came up with Draco viridis, what do you think?
Ferdy will have the create the species manually for this one :)

    2. Draco viridis means green dragon in Latin. There is no Latin word for jungle. Posted 12 years ago, modified 12 years ago

    3. What a great and fun idea to create a species record for this, I just did so :) Posted 12 years ago
      1. Great, I just have a tiny remark: according to codes of rules for the binomial nomenclature, the second part of the species name should start with a small letter, not a capital.
"In modern usage, the first letter of the first part of the name, the genus, is always capitalized in writing, while that of the second part is not, even when derived from a proper noun such as the name of a person or place. Similarly, both parts are italicized when a binomial name occurs in normal text."
You can read the rest of it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binomial_nomenclature

Draco viridis is the nickname of the JungleDragon, refering to the green lizard that serves as a mascotte of the JungleDragon site. The JungleDragon is not a real species, yet it is largely based on a real species: the Emerald Basilisk.
