Possible Cyperus strigosus This is growing in my potted garden, thanks to the birds. I was thinking it might be a kind of sedge, however I have not found one with these colorful blooms in beginning state. I also looked at Pl@nt identify and their suggestions don&#039;t match. The sedge photos here don&#039;t match either. Perhaps I&#039;m on the wrong track.<br />

  1. Wish I could help. Could be that you're not on the wrong track at all, sedges can be impossibly hard to identify. Posted 4 years ago
    1. Thanks, Ferdy! Posted 4 years ago
      1. You could try sending Gary a direct message:

        Gary BGary B

Excellent botany skills and recently shared a few sedges.

        1. Thanks for the suggestion. Posted 4 years ago
          1. Perhaps Cyperus sp.? But, I agree that Gary would certainly be the person to ask! Posted 4 years ago
            1. Thanks, I am going to wait until it blooms and see what it looks like then. I'll keep you posted. Posted 4 years ago
  2. Deb, It is a Cyperus but for now that's all I can come up with. Can you let this plant grow some more so that the flowers mature and begin developing seeds? Most of the sedge species are more easily identified when they reach that stage of development. Posted 4 years ago
    1. Sure I can do that. It’s only about 24 inches tall to answer your other question. Please wait until the blooms open and seeds.

      Thanks!

      1. That sounds good, Deb. If this is Cyperus longus it will probably be producing rhizomes and later small tubers which are said to smell faintly like sweet violets. But other species of Cyperus also produce small tubers as well. Posted 4 years ago
