Weeping Bottlebrush (Callistemon viminalis)

Creek bottlebrush inflorescence A lovely weeping form to this bottlebrush. Each inflorescence is 35 to 50 mm in diameter and 40 to 100 mm long with 15 to 50 individual flowers.

There is ongoing debate about whether the Melaleuca or Callistemon name should be used for the bottlebrush species. Some herbaria have now adopted the name Melaleuca viminalis for this species, however, this reclassification has not been adopted in the Australian Plant Census (which is accepted by ANPSA as the authority on Australian Plant nomenclature).

Appearance

Weeping Bottlebrush grows up to 8 metres in height and has pendent branches with leaves which are 3 to 7 cm long and 3 to 7 mm in width. The bright red flower spikes, which are 4 to 10 cm in length and about 3 to 6 cm in diameter occur between spring and summer.

Status

The species is, as of the 2009 and 2011 Exotic Pest Plant Council list, a Category II invasive exotic in the state of Florida.
