Appearance

Size: 25 cm long (max 45-50). Its abdominal segments are greenish with a white transversal band along the posterior edge and separated from it by a dark band. There is a small white spot on the base of the carapace of each abdominal segment. The caudal fan is uniformly greenish or brownish.

Distribution

Eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean: from Morocco to Namibia, and northwest Mediterranean.

Habitat

Inhabits shallow water from the sublittoral to 40 m, but is mostly found between 5 and 15 m with rocky and sandy bottoms.

Food

Carnivores, usually feeding upon sluggish, easily captured animals where most material is eaten alive or freshly killed.
