Appearance

Plant of 20-60 cm with glandular hairs. Stem, yellowish to reddish, barely swollen at the base. Scales (reduced leaves) 15-25 mm long. Flowers 20-30 mm, loose spike inflorescence with clove odor. Stigma of a blackish purple.

Distribution

European Temperate element, with a continental distribution in W. Europe.

Habitat

It occurs in stabilised dune grassland, and in scrub and hedge banks on chalk downs and undercliffs. Most populations are small, but some of those on dunes are of a considerable size. Lowland.

Food

A root parasite mainly of Galium mollugo and G. verum, probably perennial and sometimes long-lived.
