Tetramerous flowers, prevailingly dimorphic stamens with dorsally appendiculate anthers, capsular fruits that are free from the hypanthium, and cochleate seed.Leaves have a hypodermis and lack stomata on the adaxial leaf surface as well as conspicuous glands or stomatal crypts, and the hypanthium has a single, sparser lining of druses.

Native from Costa Rica. Worldwide spread as ornamental.Habitat
