Heteroconger enigmaticus

The enigma garden eel is an eel in the family Congridae. It is a marine, tropical eel which is known from the western Pacific Ocean, including Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. It dwells at a depth range of 3 to 25 m, and inhabits regions with dark, silty sand and seagrass of the genus ''Holiphila''.

Appearance

Males can reach a maximum total length of 43.7 cm, while females can reach 41.6 cm. Enigma garden eels are harmless to humans and are medium to dark brown in colour.

Naming

The scientific name, ''Heteroconger Enigmaticus,'' derives from the Greek 'ἕτερος' , meaning 'other' and the Latin 'conger', meaning 'conger.' ''Enigmaticus'' is derived from the Greek 'αινιγματικός' , meaning 'enigmatic.'

It was described by Peter Henry John Castle and John Ernest Randall in 1999.
