It includes several distinctive subspecies, and two of these are sometimes considered as separate species: The western hemispingus of the west Andean slope in southwestern Colombia and northwestern Ecuador, and the Piura hemispingus of the west Andean slope in southwestern Ecuador and northwestern Peru.References:
