Tomillo morisco

Frankenia ericifolia

It is a native species that in the Canary Islands has two subspecies: ssp. ericifolia, in all the Islands and ssp. latifolia (Webb & Berthel.) Brochmann, endemic to Tenerife and La Palma.

Appearance

It is a perennial subarbustive plant, which differs from other species of the genus by its shortly petiolated, ovate to oval-lanceolate, flat or revolved leaves. The flowers are scattered along the stems and have white or pink petals and calyx barely puberulous.

Spanish names: tomillo de tierra, tomillo morisco, tomillo salvaje (Lanzarote)

Distribution

its native range is Canary Islands, Cape Verde.

Habitat

Salt and drought-tolerant. Often found near coastal cliffs.
