Tamil Lacewing

Cethosia nietneri

''Cethosia nietneri'', the Tamil Lacewing, is a species of nymphalid butterfly found in Sri Lanka and south India. The species name is after John Nietner who obtained specimens of the butterfly from Ceylon from which it was described.
Tamil Lacewing butterfly resting at night I mostly photograph butterflies when they're sleeping at night and I'm out looking for reptiles and amphibians (some of which are also sleeping, but many of which are nocturnal). A lot of butterfly underwings aren't very eye-catching, which no doubt reduces the number of butterflies that are eaten while they sleep. This one was quite noticeable though!
