Clematis occidentalis var. occidentalis Clematis occidentalis var. occidentalis (Western, Purple, or Wild Clematis) is one of two clematis native to Minnesota. It is somewhat uncommon in the state. It prefers rocky soils or even cliff faces and talus slopes with some shade. This one was growing on a steep bank of boulders and glacial till in a mixed conifer/deciduous species forest.
