Stereonychus fraxini is a small Weevil (Curculionidae) in the tribe Cionini, that consists of similar beetles with ectophagous larvae creating secretion cocoons on the plant's substrate to pupate.

Appearance

The genus Stereonychus of which S. fraxini is the only representative in central and northwestern Europe is set off from the rest of the otherwise similar Cionini by having single tarsal claws on all legs. The beetles are quite variable in their colours, ranging from almost entirely pale to almost entirely black.

Food

The larvae and beetles feed monophagous on Fraxinus excelsior in central and northern Europe, but also using Fraxinus ornus in southern parts of it's range.
