Naming

The species was long thought to be described by Westwood in 1846 and it was therefor sunk into synonymy with Panorpa rufescens Rambur, 1842 (which is widely accepted to be another description of the exact same species). But Somma (2011) found that an earlier description by Westwood from 1841 existed and needed to be considered valid, hereby resurrecting confusa from synonymy with Panorpa rufescens and relegating that species to be a junior synonym of the now senior confusa.
