Panorpa etrusca

Panorpa etrusca is a species of Scorpionfly (Mecoptera: Panorpidae) from the south of Europe.

Appearance

P. etrusca is part of the Panorpa cognata group of species that have modified 6th and 7th abdominal segments in the male, where these have a "spoiler" like hind margin, whereas in the other species the segments are conical, narrowing gradually to the apex.

Naming

Originally described by Willmann in 1976 as a subspecies of Panorpa annexa, but raised to full species status by Ward in 1983.

Distribution

Known from Italy and a few locations in the extreme south-east of France
