P. etrusca is part of the Panorpa cognata group of species that have modified 6th and 7th abdominal segments in the male, where these have a "spoiler" like hind margin, whereas in the other species the segments are conical, narrowing gradually to the apex.Naming
Originally described by Willmann in 1976 as a subspecies of Panorpa annexa, but raised to full species status by Ward in 1983.Distribution
