Ceanothus americanus americanus

A variety of New Jersey tea found in various habitats of the piedmont, mountains, and (very rarely) coastal plains of eastern North America. There are three varieties of Ceanothus americanus: var. americanus, var. intermedius, and var. pitcheri. They can be differentiated by leaf shape and indumentum.

Appearance

Ceanothus americanus is a shrub-like plant that grows up to 3.5 feet high. White inflorescences are clumped together on long, axillary peduncles. Leaves are around 4-10 cm long, 2.5-6 cm wide.

Predators

Twigs and foliage are sought out by deer. Seeds are sustenance for turkeys and quail.

A host plant for the larvae of Azure butterflies (genus Celastrina) a few duskywing (Erynnis genus) species.
