Black antshrike

Thamnophilus nigriceps

The black antshrike is a species of insectivorous bird in the antbird family Thamnophilidae. It is found in Colombia and Panama. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and heavily degraded former forest.
Black antshrike - male, Uraba, Colombia Near-endemic and only found in the northwest of Colombia. There's a few similar looking antshrikes sharing this male's black appearance. It's possible to identify them on their own using subtle differences in the beak. However, this species is almost always together with the female, which looks distinctive. So finding that female, basically identifies this male. Naming

The black antshrike was described by the English zoologist Philip Sclater in 1869 and given its current binomial name "Thamnophilus nigriceps".
