Netty Ladybird (Beetle)

Heteroneda billardieri

Heteroneda billardieri (Crotch, 1871) is a species of Ladybug from the family of Coccinellidae, sometimes still referred to as Heteroneda reticulata (Fabricius, 1801), but see under "Naming". The beetle measures around 5-6mm and is found (sometimes abundantly) in Malaysia and parts of Indonesia (Java notably) and can probably be found in other parts of Southeast Asia as well.

There seem to be some interesting things to note about that one, but it'll take a few days... Beetle,Coccinellidae,Coleoptera,Geotagged,Heteroneda,Heteroneda billardieri,Heteroneda reticulata,Indonesia,Java,Ladybug,Laybird Beetle,Netty Ladybird (Beetle)

Appearance

Heteroneda billardieri somewhat resembles Harmonia testudinaria, in that it has the yellow colour and thin black grid, but it's clearly distinguished by the pronotum among other things. Other yellow and black species include some Ileis (notably Ileis galbula), some forms of Propylea luteopustulata, P. dissecta, P. japonica and the likes of Onoepia sexareata. Also, Crotch (1874) mentions one or two Coelophora with similar descriptions but with different numbers of yellow quadrants?! All those look somewhat like it, but are also clearly different.
To add insult to injury, Chazeau (1989) describes some new species from New Guinea (Heteroneda mimetica & Harmonia incognita) that are also very similar and without any photos on the Internet. Fortunately he provides good drawings.

Naming

This species was originally described in 1801 by Johann Christian Fabricius as Coccinella reticulata. George Robert Crotch disqualified the name in 1871 as "preoccupied", due to it being a junior homonym of Coccinella reticulata Olivier, 1791, from Senegal, and introduced the nomen novum billardieri Crotch, 1871 for this beetle. A few years later, in 1874, he erected the genus Heteroneda for this species. The correct name today hence is Heteroneda billardieri (Crotch, 1871), even though some publications and online databases continue to use the original name by Fabricius.
