  3. To me, this actually looks like a better candidate for Electra pilosa, which is the other common encrusting bryozoan species in New England. Membranipora membranacea has very thin calcified walls between zooids, and they are structured in strict rectangles (almost like a brick wall), whereas E. pilosa has rounder cells (as in these photos) with more material between them! ''Electra pilosa'' is a species of colonial bryozoan in the order Cheilostomatida. It is native to the northeastern and northwestern Atlantic Ocean and is also present in Australia and New Zealand.
