Long-wristed Hermit Crab - Pagurus longicarpus These crabs were quite ubiquitous in the low tide zone. And, so many of them were in pairs -- where one of them was holding the other's claw. It was so cute. These crabs can pinch, but I usually find them to be gentle and have never been pinched by one.

Habitat: Low tide zone on Laudholm beach. Laudholm is part of Wells National Estuarine Research Preserve. The preserve includes 2,250 acres of upland fields and forests, freshwater and estuarine wetlands, salt marshes, brackish marshes, scrub swamp, and a beach-and-dune system. The protected area goes from Little River to the Ogunquit River. The beach is enormous at low tide with lots of fun areas to explore for critters. It's also pretty empty as most people aren't willing to hike through the preserve to get to the beach. The beach is very variable with areas of coarse and fine sand, mudflats, boulders, and cobbles. It's an incredible place!
1. Pretty guys! Posted 5 years ago
1. Yes! Curious and so cute! I love how they hid in their shells and then would peek only one eye stalk out to see if I was still there, haha. Posted 5 years ago
1. I can imagine! And they probably fight with each other to change to a new shell too :-) Posted 5 years ago
1. Oh, yes -- I imagine that is probably true that they fight over shells! They are not easy to get out of their shells, from what I have been told (I have never tried). I knew people who used hot matches to burn them, which encourages them to vacate their shells. Isn't that horrible?! Posted 5 years ago
1. agh..I don't even want to think about it..so many psychopaths in this world torturing animals, probably even as we speak :-( Posted 5 years ago
1. Yes, it's horrible. Makes me so angry and upset to even contemplate. When the person told me the "trick" to getting the crab to vacate the shell, I was horrified. Even worse, he said it so matter-of-factly, like it was no big deal to scorch these poor animals. Ughhhh. Posted 5 years ago
