Trichius gallicus - On rose
Colour pattern on the elytra is NOT a reliable character for ID of the three Central European species of Trichius. ID of this male Trichius gallicus (aka Trichius zonatus) is based on the shape of the mesotibia and scales present only on the penultimate sternite.
Trichius gallicus is a beetle species belonging to the family Scarabaeidae, subfamily Cetoniinae.
The sides of the chest and the back of the abdomen of Trichius species are covered with a conspicuous pubescence. Head and pronotum are black, while the elytra are yellowish, crossed by a few black bands, giving the beetles more or less the general appearance of a Bumble bee. Hence the popular name of Bee beetles or Brush beetles for Trichius species as a group.
