Wasp Spider (Argiope bruennichi) I was genuinely shocked when I saw this female Wasp Spider this afternoon. partly because it was so big, and partly because the large field through which I was walking, packed with colourful plants, flowers and grasses, meant it really was a stroke of luck to see it at all.
It's only the second one I've ever seen, the other being in a managed nature reserve, many years ago.
"Argiope bruennichi", or the wasp spider, is a species of orb-web spider distributed throughout central Europe, Northern Europe, north Africa and parts of Asia. Like many other members of the genus "Argiope", it shows striking yellow and black markings on its abdomen.
