Flying Insect With Orange Abdomen Found this insect on the ground covered in ants. Realized it was still alive when I got the ants off. Have not been able to identify the species. Flying Insect With Orange Abdomen

Found this insect on the ground covered in ants. Realized it was still alive when I got the ants off. Have not been able to identify the species. This photo doesn't show the brown criss-cross lines on the back. Trichopoda_pennipes?

    Tricky one, Deb. I'm reasonably sure it's not the Trichopoda pennipes as suggested. When you check reference photos of that species, some big differences show:

    - eyes of that species are much bigger and much closer to each other
    - the abdomen is narrow and lengthy, not bulby as in your photo
    - wings are black, not clear as in your photo

    As to what it is, not sure yet. Hope some others see it. Let's give it some time.     Posted 5 years ago, modified 5 years ago

        Ferdy, I think this is a Prionyx parkeri, it has the markings on the thorax Posted 5 years ago
