Flying Insect With Orange Abdomen Found this insect on the ground covered in ants. Realized it was still alive when I got the ants off.  Have not been able to identify the species. This photo doesn&#039;t show the brown criss-cross lines on the back. Trichopoda_pennipes?  <br />

Flying Insect With Orange Abdomen

Found this insect on the ground covered in ants. Realized it was still alive when I got the ants off. Have not been able to identify the species. This photo doesn't show the brown criss-cross lines on the back. Trichopoda_pennipes?

  1. Tricky one, Deb. I'm reasonably sure it's not the Trichopoda pennipes as suggested. When you check reference photos of that species, some big differences show:

    - eyes of that species are much bigger and much closer to each other
    - the abdomen is narrow and lengthy, not bulby as in your photo
    - wings are black, not clear as in your photo

    As to what it is, not sure yet. Hope some others see it. Let's give it some time.

      1. Ferdy, I think this is a Prionyx parkeri, it has the markings on the thorax Posted 5 years ago
