Calliteara pudibunda - Young caterpillar
Jeanette found this caterpillar on her Medlar tree (Mespilus germanica) and kept it in a box for me to photgraph later that night. Meantime, before I had a chance to shoot images, it had moulted into the next stadium (the old skin is on the left behind it).
Even in its new jumpsuit, it is still a very young caterpiller though, with nothing of the big paintbrush-like tufts of hair that are so conspicuous on the older caerpillars - just very, very long single hairs going of in all directions :o)

"Calliteara pudibunda" is a moth of the family Lymantriidae. It is found in Europe and Anatolia. The Dutch common name for the moth is named for famous butterfly and insect painter Anna Maria Sibylla Merian.
