This is the caterpillar of a puss moth (Cerura vinula)! It is found throughout Europe and gets its common name from the soft, cat-like “fur” that covers the body of the adult moth.
The caterpillars have a remarkable defensive behavior. When agitated, a caterpillar rears up while waving the appendages at the end of its abdomen. If that isn’t scary enough to deter a predator, then it will squirt formic acid onto its attacker. Ouch! {Photo credit: Paul Dirksen} #JungleDragon #Pussmoth #MothWeek2020 #NationalMothWeek
