The common lionfish, also known as the devil firefish, is a species of ray-finned fish native to the western Indo-Pacific region. The common lionfish is frequently confused with its close relative, the red lionfish. The scientific name is from Greek "pteron", meaning "wing," and Latin "miles", meaning "soldier."
