  5. Today's Facebook post:

Trichius gallicus is a species of 'bee beetle' that get their nickname from the copious amount of pubescence (adorable fuzz) that covers their bodies. Many beetles, such as this species, are among nature's forgotten pollinators, meaning that they don't usually get the recognition they deserve for their pollination services.

Here are some crazy facts: with nearly 400,000 known species, beetles represent the largest order of insects. Nearly 25% of known animal species are beetles! Furthermore, beetles are the largest group of pollinating animals! Of the approximately 350,000 known species of flowering plants, beetles visit about 90% of them! They are essential pollinators, whether they mean to be or not.

Some beetles visit flowers to feast on pollen, nectar, or the plants themselves, while others use the flowers as a hiding place from which to ambush and devour other insects. But, regardless of their purpose, the beetles get pollen stuck in their hairs, which they then transfer to other flowers. And, bam --plants get pollinated. Even better, pollinator hairiness is positively correlated to pollinator success. The fuzzier, the better, which makes us assume this beetle must be top notch! #JungleDragon #beebeetle #Trichiuszonatus #Cantharophily
