  1. This is Calumma nasutum or possibly another closely allied species such as Calumma fallax. Glaw & Vences's 3rd edition Field Guide to the Amphibians and Reptiles of Madagascar (2007) suggests that Calumma nasutum was/is likely to be split, but I don't know if there have been further studies on these chameleons since that was published. One of the smallest of the arboreal chameleons, the big-nosed chameleon is named for the large, paddle-like appendage which projects from the nose region. This flexible appendage is larger and more square-shaped on males, and is believed to be used to recognise potential mates.
