Green-head ants with pupae Poking around in the earth, I unfortunately disturbed a green-head ant nest and sent the colony in to instant panic. <br />
The pupae can be seen here which are the larvae wrapped in a cocoon....these will metamorphose in to adult ants. <br />

Green-heads are endemic to this country and are well known for their distinctive metallic appearance - also for their painful, venomous sting. <br />

The green-head ant, ''Rhytidoponera metallica'', often simply referred to as the green ant, is a metallic-green coloured ant, generally 5–7 millimetres in length, that can be found throughout Australia, particularly in urban and suburban areas.
