Issus coleoptratus - pose, Heesch, Netherlands Disclaimer: subject is dead and placed on a leaf. I found it in our garden.

Tentative ID. This is likely the nymph of Issus coleoptratus, as adult about 5.5-7mm in size, as nymph unsure, perhaps 3-4mm. This is a flightless insect, despite the wings.
These waxy filaments are sometimes seen after the nymph eating live plant material. The exact purpose of these glands is not yet known. In other cicada species this has been described as playing a role in the safe removal of honeydew by coating the excreted droplets with waxy strands preventing contamination of the body.
I'm positively surprised by this perspective. Since extreme macro stacking is such a time consuming activity, after the other 3 perspectives, I wasn't even sure to do a frontal shot at all. Glad I did, as I did not expect the species to feature such beautiful crown-like appearance.
2. Fantastic photos!

I've taken a few of various Leaf Hoppers with my trusty RX10 Mk4 but it's but it's not capable of that level of detail.

    1. Thanks, Philip!

This one is at 5:1 magnification, far beyond the reach of even most dedicated macro lenses. It's quite a pain to photograph at 5:1 (light, vibration) as this is a stack of a few dozen images. So you pay a high price for this detail, quite a tedious process!

Don't know much about the RX10 Mk4, but looks to be a very flexible, powerful and versatile system. I read one can add Raynox add-on lenses to it, may be a way to get extra magnification.

I love the RX10 Mk4. No additional lenses to haul about.
However it's a 72mm camera, The Raynox 250 is 49mm while the 150 goes up to 67 mm, so you need stepdown rings.

It's something I've been looking into recently

        1. If you're on Facebook, this may be a group to look into:
          https://www.facebook.com/groups/ExtremeMacro

Pretty big gathering there of all sorts of people tinkering with macro solutions. If it's possible, somebody there may know how.

      2. I have some macro filters I'm going to experiment with. Posted 4 years ago
        1. Cool, looking forward to results. I imagine macro video to perhaps also be in your ally. In particular higher magnification video (2:1 >) is not something a lot of people do, lots of opportunity to pioneer there. Not tricking you into anything :) Posted 4 years ago
