Cockchafer or May bug Found in my garden early this morning. Poor thing had some hair wrapped around it's legs (I think it was mine!). So, gently teased it off and it was on it's way. The cockchafer, colloquially called May bug or doodlebug, is a European beetle of the genus Melolontha, in the family Melolonthidae. Some authors would place the Melolonthidae as a subfamily Melolonthinae of the family Scarabaeidae.
