Epione Underwing (Catocala epione)
Flew indoors from porch lights at the edge of a dense mixed (hickory-oak dominant) forest.
So, Jason and I typically wake up around midnight every night to go to the bathroom and to walk Snorri (our puppy). This morning, I did my thing and went back to bed while Jason was still walking the pup. I suddenly hear Jason yelling my name (startled me awake), so I run down to the kitchen to see what the commotion is about! It turns out that this large underwing moth was in our kitchen and wanted to say hello. Jason said he didn't know if it was a bird or a moth at first.
''Catocala epione'', the Epione underwing, is a moth of the family Erebidae. The species was first described by Dru Drury in 1773. It is found in North America from Quebec and Ontario south through Connecticut to Florida and west to Texas and Oklahoma.
