
Mottled Umber caterpillar - frontal, Heesch, Netherlands
The highly variable caterpillar of the Mottled Umber, in dutch named after its life cycle "Grote Wintervlinder" = big winter butterfly. Caterpillars like these can be seen April-June, yet the adults only emerge around November-December.
The adult female is wingless, and almost looks like a spider:

The Mottled Umber is a moth of the family Geometridae. It is a common species throughout much of the Palearctic region.
