Himantoglossum comperianum discovered in Israel for the first time!
the rare orchid, Himantoglossum comperianum, was accidentally discovered in Israel by a nature lover, on tuesday 19/5/2020.
on Thursday, 21/5/2020 I went to see it.
the plant is at its end, and the 10-days heat-wave we're going through is not helping... but it was an amazing and exciting experience, to look at this for the first time!
driving over 200KM and back on the same day to see a dry orchid in a day where temperatures went over 40 degrees seems really reasonable, isn't it? ;-)
the full plant:
Himantoglossum comperianum is an Orchid, first described at Crimea peninsula in th 19th century. known from Greece, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon - and now also Israel. the bulbs were used to prepare the traditional turkish Sah'leb drink, making this orchid rare and endangered everywhere it was found. the flower has 4 narrow "tongues" coming down, giving it a unique look.
